This EV Motorcycle Firm Opens Its Technology to Other Brands

Posted On April 18, 2025

The aim is to assist manufacturers in propelling innovation within the electric vehicle sector.

In the

EV world

, whether it’s cars or motorcycles, each player is developing their own technology, hoarding innovations behind paywalls to maximize profits. As expected, this approach compromises both sustainability and accessibility. The siloed mentality, with every company trying to create something new from scratch, results in increased costs, hindered advancement, and lost opportunities to expedite the transition towards more eco-friendly transportation options.

However, a handful of brands are beginning to turn the tables. Among these is one particular brand.

Verge Motorcycles

, a Finnish electric vehicle firm that’s launching an ambitious new concept known as Verge Next.

The Verge has already established itself with its sleek, high-performing electric bicycles, driven by the

Donut engine

—A robust, hubless motor embedded directly within the rear wheel. Co-developed with their collaborator Donut Lab, this circular motor aids in reducing weight, enhancing efficiency, and providing a smoother, more direct riding experience. Unlike many other firms that closely guard their technology, Verge is taking a transparent approach by making it accessible.

Verge Next represents their fresh B2B sector, focusing entirely on offering their primary technology—such as the Donut engine and various interchangeable parts—to other companies. This collaboration spans across products ranging from scooters to electric bikes.

The Donut Engine was initially created for high-performance tasks.

The Donut engine is available in various sizes to accommodate a broad spectrum of motorcycles and scooters. However, Verge goes beyond supplying components; they provide a versatile, customizable platform designed to assist other producers in reducing their timelines, lowering production expenses, and speeding up the launch of new designs. This approach significantly enhances cost-effectiveness and availability. Additionally, the technology prioritizes environmental responsibility through power-conserving attributes that lessen battery stress and prolong the lifespan of these vehicles.

Verge is essentially encouraging other businesses to collaborate on developing superior electric vehicles rather than keeping their efforts hidden from each other.

Based on what Verge CEO Tuomo Lehtimäki states, the demand is clearly present. “Multiple firms have contacted us, keen to incorporate our technology,” he mentions. He further explains, “Our aim is to develop a platform where producers can collaborate, enhancing overall security and operational efficiency.” Additionally, Marko Lehtimäki, who serves as both the CEO of Donut Lab and the chairperson at Verge, comments, “This venture goes beyond merely supplying components; we’re paving the way for advanced electric vehicles that benefit both users and the environment.”

Should Verge Next gain popularity, the consequences might be substantial. Within a few years, we may begin witnessing more cost-effective options.

electric scooters and bikes

Driven by Verge technology across various urban centers globally, fast-forward to 2045, and this strategy could potentially sustain extensive grids of shared electric cars integrated within intelligent metropolises. Extend the timeline slightly more, and these advancements may also impact remote regions—areas often overlooked by conventional transportation methods—providing them with cost-effective, adaptable means of movement.

All of this won’t occur unless there’s a change in perspective. The Verge is counting on teamwork instead of rivalry, transparency rather than secrecy. If successful, it could prompt the entire sector to reconsider the notion that progress can only be achieved through isolationism. Amidst an environment where many pathways remain sealed off, the Verge is firmly pushing one door widely ajar.

And honestly, that’s something worth getting behind.
