Honda’s Futuristic V3 Engine Moves Closer to Reality with New Trademark Filing

Posted On April 18, 2025

At least, on paper.

Honda might be intentional or perhaps not, but every hint they drop along the path regarding their V3R engine concept is incredibly intriguing. Initially, there was

the EICMA reveal

, which people (including us, naturally) admired and marveled at for weeks. Then we experienced a few possibly less thrilling changes:

A brief anecdote

regarding a demo rideable electric bike model at a Honda Motors Q&A session;

a trademark filing

there.

What do we have lined up for today then?

Another trademark filing, but this time, with the US Patent and Trademark Office. And this time, it makes it clear that Honda’s doubling down on that controversial “E-Compressor” designation for the V3R. How do we know? Because that’s the full text of the trademark filing: “V3R E-Compressor.” Honda can’t really say it more plainly than that.

To make everything perfectly clear, this is merely an application at present; it hasn’t been allocated to an examiner nor has it received approval yet. Nonetheless, the objectives underlying it are very transparent. Additionally, the International Classification specified for this submission indicates that it pertains to “motorcycles and their components.”

Up until now, this is an application for a trademark related specifically to certain letters and numbers arranged in a particular way; it does not pertain to a logo design. Moreover, it clarifies that “the mark comprises standard characters with no exclusive claim regarding font style, size, or color.” At this stage, we cannot ascertain further specifics concerning the potential features of the V3R E-Compressor, including whether it will have a distinct logo.

Nevertheless, progress remains progress, and observing such consistent advancement openly gives the impression that even more could be happening backstage. Might we witness a full unveiling of the V3R E-Compressor at EICMA 2025 in roughly half a year? It’s possible, yet purely speculative at this juncture. Honda has offered no formal announcements regarding their exhibits; thus, our safest assumption for now is simply attending the event itself.

Are you excited about the V3R E-Compressor? It’ll probably be a little easier to get excited about it when we get to finally hear it, I’m guessing. Do you want to ride one when you have the chance? Do you think Honda will outfit it with an E-Clutch (and should it)? Let us know in the comments.
